Akira Toriyama 1955-2024

Princess Futura by Yanick Paquette

Click on the picture     I have shared studio space with DC Comic artist Yanick Paquette for 12 of the last 14 years. In 2001, I was working on a short story for an underground Montreal small press publication called 106U. 6 pages of monsters and revolution from the evil Princess Futura, a character from my John Star serial going on at the time in my Veena comic book. One afternoon when coming in to work, a pencil drawing had been left on my drawing table: this art of Futura and the Hiss monster. Clearly, Yanick was looking for a subject as a warm up before working on the pencils of X-men's Gambit.
14 years later, I'm also looking for something fun to ink for a warm up...

Princess Futura appears in one story of the Veena webcomic. You can read it here:

That studio space shared with Yanick, was also shared with his assistant Clément Sauvé. We were the 3 of us and we did a lot of work there. I've written a blog post about Clément's death a few years ago, and there's a few photos of the work space. These were happy time like they say...

Black and Blind Dick Chick #1 and 2, done !

I've written a bit, but not a lot about Black and Blind Dick Chick the project I've drawn, but directed and written by Normand Labelle.
Two issues are finished, with only the lettering to finish on the second one. It's Normand's dream project and it's looking for a publisher right now.

What is it about ?

B&BDC is an absurdist comic book series played totally straight by its characters, who consider the surrealism that taint their world as perfectly normal.
In a nutshell: A private detective who has to eat cereals in order to be able to see is hired to find a missing nose said to contain all the knowledge in the world, all the while taking care of a 18-month old baby girl who happens to be a cannibal.
It does have beautiful women in black turtlenecks and long leather boots trying to avoid falling pianos, in case we forgot to mention that before.

The pages of the first issue are on line and you can read it on my Facebook page album. I've posted every page of #1, one each week. So it might be a good idea the check the FB page once in a while.

The complete album, here.

I'll keep posting pages of my comics every week there. The next one is "1986", a black and white story I did a few years ago.

New work in FemForce # 163

Last year,  I was working in an animation studio called Image Entertainment (not to be confused with the comic book company) as a character and prop artist, basically assisting the main designer on her art for the Walter and Tandoori show.

Basically, I was doing most of my 5 days week work in 3 or 4 days. That left me with a lot of time to doodle and listen to the radio. That was soon to change, because my wife would go back to work and we would have to share our Baby duties. The opposite happened : I had to take time on the week end to finish the week's work.

Eduarto Barreto art
But before that happened, I decided that my doodling should at least have some goal. I wrote to Mark Heike, main editor at AC Comics and offered him to do layouts for their FemForce book. The reason why it's only layout is because I had no acces to references or a computer. Everything had to come from experience. I asked him to do a Blue Bulleteer story if that was possible, their version of Phantom Lady. Mark quickly sent me an 8 pages script by Maura Grundmeyer and Mark S. Dail, and I had some fun doing thumbnails and body structure sketches. Months later, here is the result: Mark Heike tightened my art into a ready-to-ink page, and Scott Shriver  did the finished ink work.

By that time, I also had heard that the cover of issue #163 was to have a variant cover by the late Eduarto Barreto ! I'm a big fan of his work. This south american artist chanelled some energy from old classic artists like Alex Raymond and Harold Foster. Fluid linework, solid drawing, nice black and white...I recall especially the Martian Manhunter: American Secrets (1992) mini-serie.

Black and Blind Dick Chick: New Pages, Pages Nouvelles.

(English just below)

Merci!

I've added new pages to the  BBDC story. It's in the facebook page folders. This time all the dialogs are there and with a big enough screen, you should be able to read it. The project is moving forward, even if a bit slowly...The pages below are from issue one, while I'm presently past the middle of issue two. I'm quite happy with the "Walt Disney dream sequence" splash page..
Still not sure where this is gonna be published..Writer and project driver Normand Labelle is interested in all offers! Write here. And if you like what you see on the Facebook page, click "Like" and help make it more visible. Thank you!

Rocket Science #2

I just opened a Deviant Art account.

There. It's done. I have one now.
I was resisting having one. At first I thought only amateurs were posting there, but I've since changed my mind. A lot of beautiful artwork by gifted artists there is....
It's when I realised that Clement Sauvé had an account there, and many fans, that I changed my mind. I'll try to post a drawing each week.

I'm not crazy about the green ugly background, but I'll live with it.

Black and Blind Dick Chick : page 3 is online.

Here's page 3, inked and colored. I'll let the lettering out at this point. That way, you'll have to guess what's it's all about.

Normand Labelle is the writer and he's hired me to pencil, ink, color his project called Black and Blind Dick Chick. Usually, the way these things are done, a proposal is done to show the eventual publisher what is it all about and what it will look like. But were already past that point: happy with the result, he asked me to finish issue one. So, that mean a full 24 pages !

More pages to show you soon !

A suivre dès demain !!! Bonne découverte à tous,
Fred "

Betty Page leaves for pin-up heaven.

News here.

Since Veena has an obvious visual link to Betty Page, I guess I should post this here too.

It's a sad news. I "discovered" her in 1981 while reading Metal Hurlant. Her likeness was used for a character in Bois Willy, the serie that Denis Sire wrote and drew back then. That was way before Dave Stevens's Rocketeer. I guess Sire and Dionnet, his editor, knew of her appeal before most of the planet remembered her in the 90's.

Betty Page seen thru the eye of Denis Sire has probably been a strong influence for me. I'm actually working on a Veena story where Betty Page is not seen but has a big importance.

So her presence will be with me for a long while...

I had an earlier post with some picture I did of her here.
